Eucalyptus has long been used for its ability to boost respiratory health, strengthen the immune system, ease tension and anxiety, and fight against bacterial infection. As an incense, it was historically used for healing, purification and protection.
Oil distilled from the leaves of the eucalyptus was used in Australian Aboriginal medicine, where it was regarded as a general ‘cure-all’. The oil would be applied topically to heal wounds. The leaves were made into a tea and often used to treat fever. Later, hospitals took advantage of the antibacterial properties of the oil to sterilize medical equipment.

Eucalyptus is one of three similar genera that are commonly referred to as "eucalypts", the others being Corymbia and Angophora. Belonging to the Myrtacae family (the same family as Tea tree), the name Eucalyptus means ‘well-covered’ which refers to the little cap that covers the flower before budding.
Of the more than 300 species of eucalyptus, Eucalyptus globulus is the best known.
Some eucalyptus species have attracted attention from horticulturists, and environmentalists because of desirable traits such as being fast-growing sources of wood, producing oil that can be used for cleaning and as a natural insecticide.
As in other members of the myrtle family, eucalyptus leaves are covered with oil glands. The copious oils produced are an important feature of the genus.

Burning Eucalyptus as an incense creates a cooling and refreshing fragrance.
